Samuel Smith Harris rose to serve as bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan, earning a reputation for measured theology, heartfelt sermons, and pastoral care that reached beyond parish borders.

In his final years near Kansas City he continued to write, to counsel younger clergy, and to encourage the faithful to tend to the spiritual and material needs of their neighbors.
