Biography

Sarah Dudley Pettey earned recognition as an educator, writer, and leader, using her columns and speeches to uplift African American women while advocating for temperance and suffrage.

She guided young women in Raleigh and beyond, inviting them into organizations that fostered leadership and service while encouraging them to cultivate intellect and piety, and she now rests in Greenwood Cemetery.
