Biography

Seth Perkins Staples was one of the earliest architects of legal education in Connecticut, opening a law office and teaching many young men who came to New Haven with hopes of entering the profession. His classrooms and conversations were marked by rigorous study, practical insight, and a compassionate regard for those seeking a fair hearing.

He remained a mentor to generations of lawyers, always stressing the importance of temperance, moral character, and civic responsibility. His memory lives on at Grove Street Cemetery, where the quiet gravestone honors the educator who gave so much of himself to the rule of law.
