Shlomo Zalman Zoref
1785–1851 (age 66)
Biography
Shlomo Zalman Zoref, born in 1785, used his talent for writing to chronicle Jerusalem's trials, including the 1834 uprising and the hardships of resettlement. His letters and petitions preserved the voices of the community and helped secure aid from far-off benefactors.
Through every challenge he reminded his friends to cling to Torah and to one another, and his devotion is honored still at his grave on the Mount of Olives.
