Sir George Staunton, 1st Baronet

1737–1801 (age 64)

Biography

Sir George Staunton was trained in medicine but became widely known for his role as a bridge between Britain and the wider world, serving as physician and interpreter on the celebrated Macartney embassy to China. His writings on the customs and laws he observed earned him a reputation as a learned Orientalist whose insight deepened understanding of faraway cultures.

He carried his knowledge back to Britain with the grace of a humane scholar, advocating for enlightened curiosity and closer study of lands beyond Europe. Westminster Abbey attests to the esteem in which he was held by those who valued intellect married to duty.
