football coach and sportswriter

Biography

Sol Metzger, born in 1880, was a guiding figure in the early days of American football, shaping teams with a coach’s discipline and chronicling the sport’s growth through his writing. His dual roles on the field and in the newspaper brought grace and context to a passion that united college campuses across the region.

He passed in 1932, and though his plays ceased, the standards he set for fair play and sportsmanship live on among those who read his words, and he now rests at Bedford Cemetery.
