Biography
Solomon Newton Pettis studied law and soon earned a reputation for clear thought and fairness, gaining election to the U.S. House of Representatives to represent Pennsylvania as the nation faced civil war. In Washington he worked with colleagues across the state to keep the Union intact and to protect the rights of newly freed Americans.
After leaving Congress he returned to his legal practice, carrying the same steady temperament into civic boards and charitable efforts, and he remained a voice for thoughtful public service until his later years.
