Biography

Sophie Germain (1776–1831) was a French mathematician of exceptional talent who made groundbreaking contributions to number theory and the study of elasticity. Despite the significant barriers women faced in accessing formal mathematical education, she achieved recognition from leading mathematicians of her era and made discoveries that advanced the field substantially.

Germain's work on Fermat's Last Theorem and her research into the mathematics of elastic surfaces demonstrated her brilliant mathematical mind and determination to pursue knowledge. She corresponded with prominent mathematicians including Carl Friedrich Gauss and Joseph-Louis Lagrange, earning their respect and admiration. Her legacy as a pioneering female mathematician was honored through her burial at Père Lachaise Cemetery.
