Stephen Benton Elkins

Biography

Born in 1841, Stephen Benton Elkins rose to prominence as a lawyer, businessman, and politician whose public service included representing West Virginia in the United States Senate. Through those years he championed infrastructure and education, believing that thoughtful development could bring lasting opportunity to the mountain state.

He departed in 1911 and rests at Maplewood Cemetery, where his legacy endures in the civic institutions and economic foundations he helped strengthen.
