Stovepipe Johnson

Biography

Stovepipe Johnson, born in 1834, earned his nickname for a daring Civil War episode and was remembered afterward as a spirited cavalryman who approached life with boldness tempered by loyalty to comrades. His exploits captured the imagination, yet he also understood the importance of calm counsel in quieter seasons.

He died in 1922 and was laid to rest at the Texas State Cemetery, where his story endures as part of the state's history and as a tribute to a man who never lost sight of honor.
