Sugita Genpaku

Biography

Sugita Genpaku (1733–1817) was a prominent Japanese writer and intellectual of the Edo period, celebrated for his contributions to Dutch learning and medical knowledge. He played a crucial role in introducing Western scientific thought to Japan during a time of limited foreign contact.

Genpaku's scholarly pursuits and written works helped bridge Eastern and Western knowledge systems, earning him recognition as a pioneering figure in Japan's intellectual history. He was interred at Eikan-in Temple, reflecting his esteemed status in academic circles.
