Sumner Carruth answered the nation's call during the Civil War, rising to command in the Union Army where he led troops with discipline and care through hard campaigns.

After the war he continued to serve his community and to honor his fellow veterans, becoming a steady example of duty whose influence is still felt at West Parish Garden Cemetery.
