Susan Ann Edson

Biography

Susan Ann Edson (1823-1897) broke barriers as a physician in a time when women were seldom seen in white coats, later becoming a trusted caregiver to Mary Todd Lincoln during the challenges of the Civil War era.

Beyond her work with the First Lady, she mentored aspiring women physicians and pursued medical practice with compassion, insisting that empathy was as vital as skill in every patient encounter.
