Sylvia Beach opened Shakespeare and Company in Paris in 1919, transforming the small bookshop into an enclave for expatriate writers, artists, and readers seeking lively conversation and daring new work.
Her store became the original publisher of James Joyce's Ulysses in 1922, she nurtured the careers of countless modernists, and even after closing the shop in 1941 and returning to the United States she remained a tireless correspondent and defender of literary freedom.
