Tanaka Tosa was a samurai who lived during Japan's final years of feudal rule and the transition to the modern Meiji state. His life embodied the values and experiences of the samurai class during a period of profound social upheaval.

Tosa died in 1868, a pivotal year in Japanese history, and was laid to rest at Tennei-ji Temple, a sacred site that honored his memory and samurai heritage.
