Biography
John “The Only” Nolan was among the spirited pioneers of early professional baseball, earning his enduring nickname through determined play and a lifelong love of the national pastime. He navigated the rough-and-tumble world of nineteenth century sport with boundless enthusiasm and a belief that teamwork could lift an entire city.
When he passed in 1913 he was remembered not only for the flicker of excitement he brought to the diamond but also for the generosity of spirit he offered to teammates and fans, and his memory rests with pride at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
