Biography

Theodore Runyon (1822-1896) led troops with calm resolve during the Civil War, later serving as Newark’s mayor and as the United States minister to Germany, where he helped maintain transatlantic bonds in the years after the conflict. His strategic mind and diplomatic skills earned him esteem across the political spectrum.

He returned to private life with the same dignified presence, supporting veterans’ causes and inspiring those who served under him, and he now lies peacefully at Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
