Biography
Thérèse Tietjens (1831–1877) reigned as the great dramatic soprano of Victorian London, thrilling audiences at Covent Garden with her powerhouse portrayals of Aida, Norma, and other demanding heroines. Born to musical parents, she trained in Dresden and soon became admired for a voice of remarkable power married to refined musicianship.
Beyond the opera stage she supported younger musicians and charitable appeals, and her generous spirit was matched by a warm esprit that won her devoted friends in the artistic community; even when illness began to shadow her later years she remained a symbol of the highest standards of operatic excellence. Her grave lies at Kensal Green Cemetery.
