Biography
Thomas A. Morris was born in 1811 and brought his talents as a railroad engineer to the service of Indiana and the nation, shaping transportation networks before the Civil War and then leading regiments of Hoosier volunteers with calm, steady leadership. His role as a Union general reflected a deep sense of responsibility to the young republic and the communities that had entrusted him with command.
After the conflict he returned to railroad management and civic affairs, leaving a legacy of civic-minded progress, and he was laid to rest at Crown Hill National Cemetery, where his contributions to the state’s development are remembered.
