Thomas Botfield
1762–1843 (age 81)
Biography
Thomas Botfield, born in 1762, combined a practical command of ironworks with a curious and disciplined mind for geology, exploring the strata of the Midlands and publishing observations that helped lay groundwork for a more systematic understanding of coal and mineral formations.
He supported scientific societies, improved the welfare of labourers at his works, and encouraged local education, remaining engaged with natural history until his death in 1843 when he was laid to rest by the parish of St Michael in Hopton Wafers.
