Biography

Thomas Cole was born in 1801 and became one of the most celebrated landscape painters of the nineteenth century. As a founder of the Hudson River School of painting, Cole revolutionized American art by elevating the natural landscape to a subject of profound spiritual and philosophical significance, creating works that captured the sublime beauty of the American wilderness.

Cole passed away in 1848 at the age of 47, and was laid to rest at Catskill Village Cemetery. Though his life was relatively brief, his artistic legacy profoundly influenced generations of American painters and helped define the nation's visual culture during the antebellum period.
