Thomas Esmonde (1829–1872) served as a military professional, bringing discipline and leadership to the units under his care during an era of both peacekeeping and political change.

Comrades respected his quiet resolve and steadfast service, qualities that continue to be honored by descendants who visit Brugge General Cemetery, where he is laid to rest.
