Biography
Thomas Taggart rose from humble beginnings to become one of Indianapolis’s most influential civic leaders, serving as mayor from 1895 to 1901. He expanded parks and public utilities, modernized streetcar lines, and insisted that municipal business be conducted with both efficiency and fairness.
After his mayoralty he took on national responsibilities, chairing the Democratic National Committee and advocating for policies that sought to balance business interests with progressive reforms. He rests at Crown Hill Cemetery, where his contributions to the city and to the nation are remembered with gratitude.
