Thomas William Robertson transformed the Victorian stage with plays such as Society and Caste, introducing realistic dialogue and a focus on ordinary characters that gave audiences a mirror to their own lives. His insistence on clear storytelling and on the director's role in shaping performances marked him as the leading dramatist of his generation.
