Biography
Thure de Thulstrup came to America from Sweden and became one of the country’s most sought-after illustrators, capturing vivid scenes of the Civil War, the American West, and military life for publications such as Harper’s Weekly. His meticulous attention to detail and narrative skill brought pivotal moments of the nation’s story to life for readers at home.
He continued to portray military subjects with respect and clarity through decades of work, leaving behind canvases that have helped historians and citizens alike visualize the past; he is buried in Green-Wood Cemetery among the artistic community he served so faithfully.
