Biography

Tomiji Hirano was an engineer who contributed to Japan's rapid modernization and technological development during the Meiji period. Born in Tokyo in 1846, he came of age during Japan's most intensive period of industrial and infrastructural advancement.

His engineering work spanned the 1870s and 1880s, crucial decades for Japan's development of railways, roads, and other modern infrastructure. Hirano's burial at Yanaka Cemetery reflects his status and recognition within Meiji society as a contributor to Japan's technological progress and modernization.
