Biography

Tự Đức was the fourth emperor of the Nguyễn Dynasty, reigning from 1848 to 1883. During his lengthy reign, he faced considerable challenges including French colonial expansion and internal political pressures. Despite these difficulties, Tự Đức worked to preserve Vietnamese cultural traditions and attempted to modernize the empire's institutions.

Tự Đức's reign marked a pivotal period in Vietnamese history as the nation navigated the complexities of maintaining independence in the face of Western imperialism.
