Biography
Ulysses Sherman Grant, born in 1867, devoted his career to understanding the geology of the Midwest and to guiding the young scientists who would carry on that work. He contributed detailed studies of the region’s rock formations, collaborated on important geological surveys, and brought clarity to the complex story of the Great Lakes basin.
As a mentor and teacher, Grant inspired students with his meticulous field notes, his love of the outdoors, and his insistence that science should serve the public good. His thoughtful approach to geology and to those he taught remains part of the foundation on which later scholars built.
