Umberto II of Italy

1904–1983 (age 79)

Biography

Born into the House of Savoy in 1904, Umberto II of Italy carried the weight of monarchy through turbulent decades. He filled numerous military and diplomatic roles before inheriting a crown tossed into uncertainty by war, and his brief reign in 1946 marked the end of an era for the Italian kingdom.

Following the referendum that abolished the monarchy, the exiled king settled in Portugal and lived with quiet charity, maintaining a devotion to his country until his death in 1983; his remains now rest at the Royal Abbey of Hautecombe, a fitting monument to a life shaped by duty and restraint.
