Václav Hanka

Biography

Václav Hanka spent his life devoted to Czech literature and philology, becoming one of the most formative figures of the National Revival. A prolific writer, editor, and custodian of national heritage, he sought to preserve the language and culture through critical editions of medieval texts and by nurturing literary societies in Prague.

Hanka’s scholarship and public service left a lasting impression on Czech intellectual life, and he is remembered as a passionate advocate for national identity who now rests at Vyšehrad Cemetery among other luminaries of his era.
