Biography

Václav Kliment Klicpera (1792-1859) reshaped Czech theater through comedies infused with sharp observation and affection for his compatriots, helping to lay the groundwork for a national stage with characters drawn from towns and villages who reflected virtues and foibles without malice.

Beyond laughter he encouraged the next generation of dramatists to blend folk wisdom with educated insights, forging bridges between popular audiences and more sophisticated dramaturgy, and he now lies at Olšany Cemetery, remembered for stirring the public imagination and defending the Czech tongue.
