Biography

Valentine Hugo, born in 1887, immersed herself in the avant-garde circles of Paris and became a cherished collaborator of poets and painters who were searching for new visual languages. Her delicate ink drawings, often inspired by dreamlike visions, kept alive the spirit of surrealism through the intervening decades.

She lent her hand to illustrated books, theatrical sets, and the nurturing of younger artists, leaving a quiet yet powerful imprint on the Montparnasse community that claimed her after 1968.
