Venus Xtravaganza (1965–1988) was a dazzling performer in New York City’s ballroom culture, a world she lit up with courage, artistry, and the quick wit that made her an unforgettable presence. As a featured voice in the documentary Paris Is Burning, she brought visibility to the lives of transgender women of color, sharing both the glamour and the hardships of a community often invisible to the wider world.

Her dream of becoming a professional model inspired countless people in the ballroom scene to imagine a future beyond the constraints they faced, and her openness about identity and aspiration paved the way for more compassionate conversations.
