Biography

Wally Hickel (1919–2010) built a career on long-range thinking, serving two terms as Alaska’s governor, accepting the post of U.S. Secretary of the Interior in 1969, and later returning to the governorship in the 1990s.

Through the tumult of boom-and-bust cycles he promoted conservation balanced with responsible development, believing fiercely in Alaskan self-reliance and the stewardship of its wild places.
