Walter Nowotny

1920–1944 (age 24)

Biography

Walter Nowotny matured into a young aviator whose talents were marked by a reflective seriousness, and while he flew for the German air force, he remained attentive to the welfare of the pilots who served beside him and to the burdens shared by their families.

His death in 1944 left a void among those who remembered him not only for his skill behind the controls but for the letters he wrote home, urging patience and expressing concern for the peace they all longed to see; he is interred at Vienna Central Cemetery, where friends gather quietly to honor that camaraderie.
