Biography
Walter Sickert, born in 1860, was a pivotal artist whose prints and paintings bridged Impressionism and a more modern realist sensibility; he championed urban scenes and the expressive quality of everyday life, and as a teacher he inspired generations of students to look at their surroundings with fresh eyes.
He spent his later years between London and the English countryside, always pursuing the subtle interplay of light and shadow, and after his death in 1942 he was buried in Bathampton, remembered as a stimulating presence in British art.
