Biography

Walter Thorn was born in 1844 and answered the nation’s call during the Civil War, joining the Union Army with a determination that carried him through campaigns in the southern states. His steady presence in artillery and infantry actions earned him the respect of comrades and superiors alike, and he remained with the Army during the difficult years of Reconstruction.

After the war, Thorn continued to serve in garrison and recruiting duties, helping to maintain the readiness of the expanding postwar Army. He passed from active service with the same quiet resolve that marked his battlefield days and was laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery among his fellow soldiers.
