Biography

Warren Clay Coleman, born into slavery, became a pioneering businessman who raised capital from Black and white investors to build the Coleman Manufacturing Company, one of the first African American-owned textile mills in the South.

He believed industry could provide dignity and opportunity, remaining deeply involved in the welfare of his workers and supporting apprenticeships and community uplift long after the looms fell silent, and he now rests in Old Campground Cemetery.
