Biography

Washington Bartlett, born in 1824, arrived in California as the state was taking shape and built a career in law and municipal affairs that led him to become San Francisco's mayor and, later, Governor of California.

His administration championed civil service reform and fiscal responsibility, and although his time in office was brief, he is remembered at Mountain View Cemetery as a dignified leader who believed deeply in the promise of this state.
