Biography
Washington Duke was a tobacco industrialist whose efforts helped lay the foundation for a thriving community in Durham. His leadership in business was matched by a deep commitment to supporting education and civic life.
In later years he devoted significant resources to establishing institutions that would benefit generations to come, including the university that bears his family name. He is remembered with gratitude and is laid to rest at Duke Chapel.
