Watanabe Nangaku (1767–1813) was a painter of the Edo period whose artistic career, though brief, made meaningful contributions to Japanese visual culture. Working from Sōrin-ji Temple, he developed his distinctive style within the rich artistic traditions of his era.
Though he lived only forty-six years, Watanabe Nangaku's paintings reflect the refined aesthetic sensibilities of early 19th-century Japan, with his memory preserved at the temple that supported his artistic practice.
