Wellington R. Burt

Biography

Wellington R. Burt, who was born in 1831, built a vast lumber and financial enterprise, yet he never forgot the humbler roots from which he rose; his offices were reputed for careful accounting and a desire to nurture the communities that supplied his mills.

In later years he turned his attention toward charitable gifts, backing libraries, educational institutions, and hospitals, so that when he passed in 1919 the promise of those enterprises lived on in the communities he sought to strengthen.
