Wells Andrews Hutchins

Biography

Wells Andrews Hutchins emerged from Ohio's legal community in the mid-nineteenth century, winning election to the Thirty-seventh Congress where he represented his neighbors during the storm of the Civil War. He used his voice to support measures that kept the Union intact and to ensure that Ohio's resources aided the war effort before returning to his legal practice after one term.

In later years he remained a trusted counselor to younger lawyers and a steady presence in civic affairs, quietly reminding all who knew him of the importance of moderation, common purpose, and the rule of law in a changing republic.
