Wendell Culley

1906–1983 (age 77)

Jazz trumpeter

Biography

Wendell Culley made his trumpet sing with the swagger and nuance of the Kansas City swing era, serving in the brass sections of the likes of Andy Kirk before bringing his bold tone to the Count Basie Orchestra and later studio sessions in Hollywood. His versatility allowed him to bridge big band excitement with small group intimacy, and he became known for a warm, assertive sound that lifted every arrangement.

He also shared his knowledge with younger musicians, encouraging them to listen attentively and to carry forward the joy of jazz, a legacy as enduring as the music he made while he rests at Rose Hills Memorial Park.
