Biography
William Balfour Baikie was a naturalist and physician whose explorations of the Niger River combined scientific observation with a deep concern for the welfare of local peoples.
He worked to improve communications, health, and understanding in West Africa, leaving behind journals and specimens that testify to his restless curiosity and compassion, while his memory rests at St Magnus Cathedral, Kirkwall.
