William Bartram

Biography

William Bartram was born in 1739 and became one of America's most celebrated naturalists and botanists. His pioneering work in documenting and studying the flora and fauna of North America made him a foundational figure in American natural history and scientific exploration.

William Bartram's legacy extends far beyond his lifetime, as his detailed observations and illustrations continue to inform botanical and ecological studies. He passed away in 1823 at an advanced age and was interred at Bartram's Garden in Philadelphia, the botanical garden he helped establish and where his life's work was centered.
