William Behnes

1795–1864 (age 69)

Biography

William Behnes trained at the Royal Academy Schools and quickly became known for his spirited portrait sculptures, capturing the likenesses of leading statesmen, actors, and members of the royal family with a naturalism that secured commissions for public monuments and grave memorials.

Though his final years were shadowed by ill health, Behnes’s works continued to grace civic spaces and the private salons that treasured his craftsmanship, a legacy now commemorated beside other luminaries at Kensal Green Cemetery.
