Biography

William Brydon (1811–1873) trained as a physician and spent much of his career serving in British India, where he became known for his calm efficiency in treating soldiers and civilians alike. He was respected for bringing medical discipline to campaigns and for the compassion with which he cared for the sick.

His name is remembered most poignantly for his survival of the 1842 retreat from Kabul, a dramatic ordeal that made him an emblem of perseverance and a witness to the dangers faced by medical officers in the field.
