William Buchan was a physician who brought medicine into the homes of ordinary people through his enduring work, Domestic Medicine, which set out practical advice on health and well-being. His sympathetic approach emphasized prevention, personal hygiene, and rational care, aiming to make knowledge accessible beyond elite circles.
The doctor’s gentle persistence in spreading medical understanding helped relieve suffering and inspired others to think more humanely of the sick. He now rests in Westminster Abbey, a fitting memorial to a healer who sought to serve all levels of society.
