Biography

William Channell (1804–1873) rose through the ranks of the bar to become a judge noted for his calm temper and precise reasoning, eventually sitting as a Baron of the Exchequer and then in the Court of Common Pleas. He carried out his duties with a careful eye on both principle and equity, earning praise for decisions that balanced legal accuracy with compassion.

Channell’s colleagues recalled him as a mentor to younger barristers, a man who took the time to explain the law’s finer points, and his burial in Highgate Cemetery closed a career spent ensuring that the common law remained accessible and just.
